Recent rgional and national publications are indicating the Presidio La Bania (Fort of the Bay) in Goliad, TX, and its quaint Our Lady of Loreto Chapel are an elegant wedding location despite the long dark history. And altar-bound and recently wedded couples seem to agree that the Spanish Colonial citadel and the 232-year-old church are a great place to tie the knot. Despite its dramatic and often bloody past, including the Goliad Massacre during the Texas Revolution in 1836, couples continue to seek out the National Historic Landmark and its pastoral setting beside the San Antonio River to exchange marital vows, Catholic, Christian and non-denominational. "San Antonio Weddings" and TheWeddingRingBlog say the couples are attracted to its unique sanctuary, dark history and The Quarters, overnight accommodations once used by former officers and priests, which many visitors contend regularly exhibits paranormal activity.

More than 5,000 visitors will witness authentic reenactments of the Battle of Coleto Creek and the ensuing "Goliad Massacre" during the 26th Living History Weekend at the Presidio La Bahia (Fort of the Bay) National Historic Landmark in Goliad, TX, on March 26-27. In addition to skirmishes, cannon fire, cavalry charges and an emotional candlelight vigil, there will be visits to the encamped Mexican and Texian forces, educational lectures, comments by John Willingham, author of the historical novel "Edge of Freedom." The 290-year-old Presidio La Bahia (Fort of the Bay) National Historic Landmark in Goliad, TX, will be the site March 26-27 for the 26th annual re-enactment of the "Goliad Massacre" — a bloody chapter in the Texas Revolution that eventually led to its independence from Mexico 175 years ago. More than 300 re-enactors on both sides will stage colorful skirmishes and battles, encampments and cavalry charges filling the air with shouts, cannon blasts and black powder gun smoke for an estimated 5,000 visitors of all ages. Lectures will be held in the quaint Our Lady of Loreto Chapel, candlelight tours in the evening. On Sunday, the massacre — some argue "execution" — will be re-staged on one of the three 1836 sites, followed by a procession to the nearby Fannin Memorial for a service that includes taps and a 21-gun flintlock salute. Travelers will want to get their Passports to Texas History stamped and be eligible for awards and prizes during the 175th year of Texas Independence.
