Who is the architect for the Dallas Museum of Art?
I have so far only been able to find the art director for the museum in the late 70′s to early 80′s.
Also, what are some major structural designs that make it unique, in your mind? I was just there, and failed to see anything that was memorable, except that it was laid out rather haphazardly.
I think you got it – haphazardly. I live in Dallas. Actually, it was designed to fit on a sloping site and to provide a lot of storage for stuff not on display and to provide as much display as possible for the permanent displays. The DMA is an encyclopedic museum which means it is like a text book – it has one or only a few examples (like pictures in the book) of every type of art from all the ages. These are displayed in large sections so that you can walk through the years or the areas. Compared to some other museums, it has very strong African art holdings largely because of the interests of some earlier supporters. Since that is not my interest, a chunk of the museum has less interest to me.
The building has a moderate variety of visual stimulation inside where the various levels reach the main vault and the long hallway through the center. The exhibit spaces have a good variety of room shape so you are not walking up and down rectangular rooms. The back office and storage spaces are good for working and functional without wasting space.
James Pratt was the architect per this site. http://prattarchitects.com/dma.html Aren’t you thrilled by knowing that?
In my opinion, Dallas has not been well served by its arts patrons, especially compared to Ft. Worth. Many of the donations have been selfish and restricted in use and the amount of imagination has been limited. I find the new opera and theater buildings being built next to the DMA, Nasher and Symphony buildings to be astonishing in their promise and I only hope it will be carried out. I also note that residential skyscrapers are being built along side of them and this reflects part of a huge change downtown – 8 or 10 years ago there were only a couple of hundred apartments and no condos downtown.
